Overview
This post explains how Shopify AI commerce works in 2026 and what has changed since our 2025 analysis. It shows what has worked, what has not, and how UK retailers can prepare.
Key Takeaways
- Shopify now offers Agentic Storefronts, a Catalog for AI agents and the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard that it co-developed with Google.
- Discovery inside AI assistants is real, but fully autonomous checkout has been slower, because OpenAI scaled back ChatGPT Instant Checkout in March 2026.
- Many rollouts began with US merchants and shoppers, so check what applies to your UK store in your Shopify admin.
- AI agents will not remove all cart abandonment, because Baymard found that many shoppers abandon carts when they are just browsing.
- Clean product data, accurate stock and clear policies decide whether an agent recommends your products.
- Business Central can hold the product, stock and order data behind your store, so keep it accurate and in sync.
Shopify AI Commerce: What Has Changed since 2025
In August 2025, we described Shopify’s first agent tools and a prediction that AI agents would become a main way to shop. Since then, Shopify has shipped several of those ideas, and some have moved faster than others.
We corrected a few points. The old post said that 70% of carts end without a purchase and named no source. It also claimed agents would remove those barriers. The figure now cites Baymard, with Baymard’s caveat.
We also removed the claim that early adopters would “capture the largest market share”, because nobody can prove it.
What Shopify Has Built for Agentic Commerce
Agentic commerce means AI assistants that search, compare and buy on a shopper’s behalf. Shopify’s pieces now fit together like this.
| Piece | What it does | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Agentic Storefronts | Syndicate your products to AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode | Introduced in the Winter ’26 Edition, and reported to activate by default for eligible stores |
| Shopify Catalog | Turns product data into a structured, searchable source for AI agents | Catalog API is the discovery layer of the Universal Commerce Protocol |
| Universal Commerce Protocol | Open standard for how AI agents discover products, build carts and check out | Co-developed by Shopify and Google |
| Public MCP servers | Let developers build agents on Catalog, Cart and Checkout | Opened to all developers in the Spring ’26 Edition |
| Agentic Plan | Lets brands that are not on Shopify list products in the Catalog | Aimed at non-Shopify sellers |
Shopify describes the developer side in its Spring ’26 Edition notes. Most of the merchant-facing detail comes from Shopify and from third-party reporting, so check your own admin for what applies to you.
How It Works for a Shopify Store
In simple terms, the flow has four steps.
- A shopper asks an AI assistant for something, such as waterproof walking boots under £150.
- The assistant searches Shopify’s Catalog for matching products.
- It shows your product with price, availability and reviews.
- The shopper buys, and the order lands in your Shopify admin.
From there, your normal process applies. The order reaches Business Central through the connector, and your team picks, ships and invoices as usual. Our guide to Shopify and Business Central integration explains that flow.
What Has Not Worked So Far
The hype ran ahead of the results. OpenAI reportedly scaled back Instant Checkout in March 2026, after only a small number of merchants went live. Purchases now complete on the merchant’s own site, and ChatGPT focuses on discovery.
Reports also describe fees on some AI-channel sales, and a US-first rollout. Treat these details as moving targets, because platforms change terms quickly.
The practical lesson is simple. Discovery in AI assistants is arriving now, but fully autonomous buying is still early. Prepare for discovery first.
The Cart Abandonment Reality Check
The old post said that AI agents would remove the reasons shoppers leave carts. Baymard Institute’s research puts the average documented abandonment rate at about 70%, so the problem is real.
However, Baymard also found that 42% of US online shoppers abandoned a cart in the past three months because they were just browsing. Its checkout research gives the detail. An agent cannot fix that, so do not expect it to remove abandonment.
What It Means for Traditional E-Commerce Strategies
Search engine optimisation, pay-per-click advertising and social marketing still matter. AI assistants add another route, so your products also need to be easy for machines to read.
You may also see fewer direct site visits from some shoppers. That reduces the browsing data you collect, so plan other ways to understand your customers, such as reviews, order data and email.
Prepare Your Product Data
AI agents work from your product information. Better data means better recommendations.
- Write clear titles and descriptions that say what the product is and who it suits.
- Fill in attributes such as size, colour, material and compatibility.
- Add barcodes or GTINs and accurate product types.
- Use good images, and keep prices and variants consistent.
- Publish clear delivery and returns policies.
If you run Business Central, hold your master data there and sync it to Shopify. Copilot can also draft product descriptions from item attributes, which you can publish to Shopify. Our post on ten ways Copilot helps SMEs explains how.
Where Business Central Fits
An AI agent will only recommend products that look available. If your stock is wrong, you will oversell, and an agent-led order can arrive when you have nothing to ship.
- Run frequent inventory syncs, and set the default inventory policy to Deny so Shopify stops selling at zero stock.
- Check the Synchronization Errors cue in Business Central every day.
- Keep prices, taxes and B2B catalogues consistent between the two systems.

Risks and Limits to Plan For
- Brand control: an agent describes your product in its own words, so accurate data matters.
- Customer relationship: agents may sit between you and the shopper, so capture consent and order data carefully.
- Privacy: UK GDPR applies to the customer data that flows through these channels.
- Fees and terms: check the cost of each AI channel before you switch it on.
- Availability: many features start in the US, so confirm what your UK store can use.

What This Means for Your Business
AI shopping is moving from prediction to practice, but unevenly. Discovery in assistants is the part to prepare for now, and the main work is data quality, stock accuracy and clear policies.
Start with an audit of your product data and your stock sync. Then check your Shopify admin for the AI channels available to your store, and test them on a small range first.

FAQs
Agentic commerce means AI assistants that search, compare and buy on a shopper’s behalf. The shopper states what they need, and the assistant finds products and, in some cases, completes the purchase. Shopify supplies the catalogue and checkout tools behind it.
Agentic Storefronts let a Shopify store appear inside AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode. Shopify introduced them in its Winter ’26 Edition and reportedly activated them by default for eligible stores in 2026. Check your admin for availability in the UK.
It is an open standard that Shopify co-developed with Google. The standard describes how AI agents discover products, build carts and check out with merchants. Merchants do not usually work with it directly, because Shopify handles the protocol.
Many rollouts began in the US, so availability for UK stores may differ. OpenAI also scaled back Instant Checkout in March 2026, so purchases complete on merchant sites. Check your Shopify admin for the channels open to your store.
Not entirely. Baymard Institute puts average abandonment at about 70%, and 42% of US shoppers said they abandoned a cart because they were just browsing. Agents can smooth checkout, but they cannot change intent.
Improve your product titles, descriptions, attributes and images. Add GTINs, keep prices consistent, publish clear delivery and returns policies, and keep stock accurate. Then check your Shopify admin for the AI channels you can switch on.
Business Central holds your item, stock and order data. The Shopify connector syncs items, inventory, prices and orders, so accurate Business Central data supports accurate AI recommendations. Copilot can also draft product descriptions that you can publish to Shopify.
Prepare, but do not overspend. Discovery in AI assistants is arriving, while autonomous checkout is still early. Fix your product data and stock accuracy first, because that helps every channel.
